SNCF's CC 6500 locomotives are considered the queens of the French rails, synonymous with power and elegance. Built between 1969 and 1975 by Alsthom, these DC (1,500 V) electric locomotives were designed for fast, heavy trains, particularly on demanding lines like Paris-Lyon. With a power output of 5,900 kW and a maximum speed of 200 km/h, they were used on prestigious services such as the Capitole and Mistral, while also being versatile for heavy freight. Their angular design, by Paul Arzens, and their brown, then concrete, livery made them instantly recognizable. Equipped with single-engine bogies and great reliability, they were the flagship of the main electric lines until the arrival of the TGV. Retired from regular service in the 2000s, CC 6500s remain mythical machines for railroad enthusiasts.
