The CC 14000 and CC 14100 electric locomotives, put into service in the 1950s, were specially designed for railroad lines supplied with 25 kV 50 Hz single-phase current. These locomotives, manufactured by Alsthom and Société Alsacienne de Constructions Mécaniques, were intended for lines in north-eastern France, particularly those running through the Lorraine region.
The CC 14000s used a connecting rod transmission, a technology inherited from steam locomotives, while the CC 14100s were equipped with a more modern, higher-performance cardan shaft transmission. These locomotives were ideally suited to hauling heavy freight trains on the steep gradients of industrial lines, particularly those linking mining and iron and steel basins.
Robust but noisy, they marked the era of industrial electrification. Gradually replaced in the 1980s by more versatile models such as the BB 15000, they remain a landmark of French railway innovation. A few examples are now preserved by associations and exhibited in museums.
