BB 27000 locomotives are part of Alstom's Prima family, which includes BB 27300, BB 37000 and E 37500. They gradually replaced the ECC 6500, CC 7100, BB 8100 and BB 12000.
These locomotives are dual-current (1.5 kV DC and 25 kV 50 Hz) and all belong to the Freight business (the BB 27300, derived from the BB 27000, are assigned to the Transilien business). They are powered by asynchronous motors.
With a central driver's cab, the locomotives are controlled via two computer consoles, as are all locomotive parameters. They are also equipped with ATESS (the black box). Two exterior mirrors keep a watchful eye on the moving train.
The engines are suspended from the nose and rest on the locomotive axle via a barrel box. This arrangement is ideally suited to speeds of up to 140 km/h. The transformers used to modify the current for the traction motors were manufactured by the former Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine transformer factory. These transformers were manufactured under an Alstom order.
Two pantographs are responsible for capturing the current at the catenary: a single-phase pantograph for capturing the 25 kV 50 Hz and a continuous pantograph for capturing the 1.5 kV DC.
