92 CC 72000 diesel-electric locomotives were built by Alsthom for the Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Français. They are the SNCF's most powerful diesel locomotives. Thirty of them became CC 72100s, through re-engining.
In December 2009, CC 72000s made their last regular commercial service on the Nantes - Tours - Lyon line, where they were replaced by X 72500s. However, one of the main reasons for their withdrawal, apart from their age, was the pollution generated by their diesel engines, which were not compatible with the new European UIC standards. Since 2009, only the 72049, 72074 and 72084 remain in the fleet. They are mainly used to transport written-off equipment to a depot or scrap yard, or during test campaigns for new equipment. On a rarer scale, on line 4, they replace CC 72100s that have failed, until the complete withdrawal of the hauled compositions in April 2017.
CC 72000s can be recognized by the noise of their engines, which gives a measure of their power.
